For twelve months, the Paris photographer Laura Stevens transformed her bed into a stage set for a series of portraits, and more than fifty unnamed men agreed to pose nude on a single white sheet. In most cases, she had never met her subject prior to the shoot, but after some tea and conversation, a new collaboration was born. What motivated you to embark on this project? I find this reductive and too subjective, and I wanted to engage in finding my own way of looking at and portraying the man.
Andreas H. His images are instantly recognisable by their simple aesthetic and perfect synthesis of beauty and form. His work has been published and exhibited internationally, and his iconic images are familiar to anyone with a passion for photography of the human body.
The nude figure has been a feature of art for thousands of years. It is thought that the figurines may have represented fertility deities. You have probably already been exposed to bad pun semi-intended male nudes, which feature prominently in Greek sculpture and Roman art.
Nude Photography can be quite a divisive subject to discuss in the photography world. There are many that see it as a perfectly legitimate art form that can empower people and question perceptions of beauty. At the same time, there is another argument that it is exploitative, degrading and impossible to look at any differently than pornography.
Why can images of nude women be tacitly accepted as neutral, while images of men are labeled as exclusively queer? Why have conversations surrounding body positivity and self-love eluded men? These are some of the questions Ekue hopes to explore, and render irrelevant, through her project.
At the age of eighteen, I bought my first camera and studied photography for 6 months but gave it up. But in my early forties, I went back to school and completed a diploma in photo imaging and now at fifty six years old, I still love doing what I do. Around ten years ago, I did my first art nude shoot and photographing men has become a real passion and even though I photograph both male and female models, I mainly concentrate on photographing men.
